CACHAO: UNO MAS“[The] band sounds fabulous in a first-rate recording mix; visual aspects are also high-grade.” —Variety “...the music...propels [the film] forward and wordlessly makes the case for Cachao’s lasting influence on Latin and popular music.” —SF Weekly “Una apasionada carta de amor a este artista innovador.” —el periodico de barcelona CACHAO: UNO MAS, the Doc Film Institute’s first original production, paid tribute to the life and music of one of the greatest Afro-Cuban musicians of all time, Israel López “Cachao.” This 68-minute documentary, shot primarily in San Francisco, was produced by Andy Garcia, Tom Luddy and Stephen Ujlaki. The film was made by professional filmmakers working with SF State film students. It premiered at the San Francisco International Film Festival, has screened at several prestigious international festivals in the US, Spain, Mexico, Brazil and Colombia. The film will have its television premiere on PBS’s American Masters in 2010. In ProductionThe DFI’s second doc, directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker, and San Francisco State alum, Steven Okazaki, is inspired by the de Young Museum’s ground-breaking exhibition, Asian|American|Modern Art: Shifting Currents, 1900-1970, curated by SF Gallery Director Mark Johnson. The DFI is also mentoring and fundraising for a feature length documentary, THE TRUST, directed by Tamara Perkins, that explores the consequences of the American Correctional System through incredible stories of inmates at San Quentin who are determined to make a difference with an inmate training program. ArchivalThe DFI has documented the presentation of a Marcus Lifetime Achievement Award to Mikhail Baryshnikov, a performance by Gidon Kremer’s Kremerata Baltica, and a program by Frederick Wiseman.
