Doc Film Festivals
The Doc Film Institute presents an annual festival with screenings
at the de Young Museum and Castro Theatre in San Francisco. Green
Screen United Nations
World Environment Day Film Festival, held at San Francisco’s historic
Castro Theatre, inaugurated the DFI and featured a tribute to Swedish filmmaker
Stefan Jarl and the West Coast premieres of Hubert Sauper’s Darwin’s
Nightmare, subsequently nominated for an Academy Award, and Werner Hertzog’s
Grizzly Man.
The Marcus Lifetime Achievement Award in Film is
presented annually to a non-fiction filmmaker who has contributed
significantly to the genre. In 2006, a joint award was presented
to Richard Leacock and D.A. Pennebaker, pioneers of cinema verite.
